In Thailand, Your Phone Is Your Lifeline

This isn't hyperbole — Thailand is a country where being offline creates genuine problems. Grab is the only reliable way for foreign visitors to get a fair taxi price; without data, you're at the mercy of TukTuk drivers who may not know your hotel by name and will almost certainly quote a tourist price. Bangkok's BTS Skytrain stations are signposted in English, but the sois (side streets) off the main roads are another world entirely. And the best street food in Thailand — the boat noodle soup that's been in the same family for three generations, the papaya salad cart that only locals know — is found through Wongnai, Google Maps reviews, and Instagram location tags, not through guidebooks.

Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and the Islands Are Three Different Worlds

Bangkok: 5G performance in Silom, Siam Square, and Asok commercial districts is genuinely fast. BTS stations maintain signal throughout. Even at the notoriously crowded Chatuchak Weekend Market, coverage holds up better than you'd expect.

Chiang Mai: The Old City and Nimman Road area have solid 4G. The road up to Doi Suthep temple weakens progressively — set your navigation before starting the ascent rather than relying on live routing.

Islands: Patong Beach in Phuket has strong commercial-area coverage. Koh Phangan during Full Moon Party gets congested at the tower level — upload your photos after the party rather than during. Koh Tao has weaker land signal in some dive sites, but dive center areas are generally usable.

What Actually Uses Your Data in Thailand

Grab rides consume almost nothing — roughly 1–3MB per trip. A day of heavy Grab usage barely touches 30MB. What genuinely depletes a data plan: batch-uploading 100 RAW iPhone photos to iCloud from a hilltribe village outside Chiang Mai, or running FaceTime from the deck of a Phuket sunset cruise so family back home can see the view. These are the moments that separate a 5GB plan from a 20GB plan.

A practical rule: if your trip involves islands, you need more data than you think. Island-hopping between Phuket, Koh Samui, and Koh Phangan — with ferry check-ins, accommodation confirmation, and the inevitable "I'm on a boat" Instagram stories — easily runs 8–12GB over two weeks.
